The BCDC was founded in 2019,

When then-Burnet County Democratic Party Chair Marti Pogue suggested the formation of a Burnet County Democratic Club.  She envisioned this Club — as a separate entity from the county party — to assist and assume control of some of the most time-consuming, laborious tasks and roles facing the county party.

Founding Visionaries 

Motivated by Pogue's vision, Mel Hazlewood, BJ Henry, Mary Doran and Shirley Schmidt united to form the interim leadership team. Together, these five women — founders — activated the creation of the Burnet County Democratic Club. 

In March 2019, the first meeting was held at the Trailblazer Grille in Burnet.

Activate. Educate. Motivate.

 mission and Inspired to act, the Club designated "Activate. Educate. Motivate.” as it's official motto. and designed a logo. The email newsletter was launched and the county party designated Club as admin on the Burnet County Democrat Facebook page.   


In July, members (those who had made donations) received a draft of the proposed bylaws, which they accepted by acclamation in August.

The First Board of Directors

In October, members nominated the Club's first board of directors. The following nominees were chosen to serve on the board:  
 

  • BJ Henry, president

  • Mel Hazlewood, vice president

  • Cindy Dashnaw, secretary

  • Audrey Mohan and Karen Mohan, co-treasurers.


With overwhelming support, members voted to elect these individuals.

The Club hosted its first ticketed event, a holiday party on Dec. 1, 2019 at the Wedding Oak Winery in Burnet.

2020: COVID and a Presidential Election

The Club worked quickly to create a logo and it's official motto “Activate. Educate. Motivate.” soon after, the email newsletter was launched. The county party also delegated the task of managing the Facebook page to the Club.
